—Save the date for the San Diego Regional CATESOL conference, which will take place on March 7, 2015, at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California. The theme for our conference this year is “Powered UP!” This open-ended theme reflects both the excitement of integrating technology into our learning environments as well as the importance of motivating and empowering our students through innovative and effective teaching. Workshops will take place in our new buildings with the latest instructional media technology, against the backdrop of our beautifully xeriscaped grounds. Come join us for a day of learning, sharing, exploring, and networking.2015 San Diego Regional logo

Kate Kinsella

Our keynote speaker is Kate Kinsella, EdD, a teacher educator at San Francisco State University. Dr. Kinsella is a national leader in the field of academic language and literacy whose 25-year teaching career focus has been equipping youths from diverse backgrounds with the communication, reading, and writing skills to be career and college ready. In her keynote address, titled “Disrupting Classroom Discourse: Preparing Students and Teachers for Higher Ed and Workplace Register Demands,” Dr. Kinsella will provide practical ways in which teachers can expand students’ command of the advanced vocabulary needed for success in their academic course work and their profession.

The program will begin at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast provided free with registration. Four sessions of concurrent workshops will provide a wide variety of opportunities to learn new and effective teaching approaches and techniques. According to Helen Liesberg, conference program chair, “It is the goal of the conference committee to offer an array of workshops on effective ways to energize classes, motivate students, and integrate educational technology to enhance student engagement and learning.” In addition to a multitude of informative workshops and presentations, you’ll find more informal opportunities to learn and share with colleagues in lunchtime rap sessions and poster sessions. Finally, you can visit publishers and vendors in our exhibitors’ area, which will be open all day.

Registration is open and the deadline to register is February 21, 2015. Register online to skip the rush on the day of the conference and receive a discount. The cost of online registration remains low at $45 for members, $55 for nonmembers, and $35 for instructors from Mexico and all students. Lunch is provided for $8. It is recommended that you buy lunch at the time that you register, as no other food services are available on campus. Registration information can be found at http://tinyurl.com/sdcatesol2015.

If you have attended a CATESOL conference in the past, you know what an enriching professional development experience it is. Why not go beyond attending? We are seeking volunteers for a variety of jobs to bring the event off without a hitch. If you would like to volunteer, please contact our volunteer coordinator Michele Weaver at michele.weaver@gcccd.edu.

Finally, the conference cannot succeed without a variety of exciting, informative workshops and presentations. Do have teaching tips and tricks to demonstrate? Have you tried a new method or approach that you would like to present? Would you like to share new and up-to-date research in pedagogy with your peers? Do you have an innovative way to incorporate technology to enhance learning? We are seeking proposals for presentations and workshops for all student populations and in all areas of interest, including K-12, community college, college and university, adult level, intensive English programs, intercultural communications, technology enhanced language learning, teaching English for the workplace, teaching of pronunciation, and nonnative language educators’ and part-time educators’ issues. Lead presenters receive a discount on their registration fee. Please submit your proposal at http://tinyurl.com/sdcatesol2015. The deadline for proposal submissions is December 31, 2014.
