By BARBARA ISHIDA—The Northern Regional CATESOL Conference, with the theme of “Promoting a Common Core for Academic Success,” will be held 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the San Joaquin County Office of Education, Wentworth Education Center, 2707 Transworld Dr., Stockton. The theme for the conference relates to a “common core” in several ways. One way, of course, is the Common Core State Standards that are familiar to all K-12 teachers and the driving force behind the school curriculum. Another is a common core of best practices that engender student learning and success not only for the K-12 school system but also for success in higher education. Yet another is that although the standards directly affect students, they also affect the parents who deal with the daily realities of the curriculum in the way of homework. These parents also need support in order to help their children be successful. Come join the common core that promotes academic success. The preregistration deadline for the conference is April 13; fees are $45 for members, $55 for nonmembers, and $35 for students. Check for more details.

Barbara Ishida is chair for the 2015 Northern Regional CATESOL Conference.
