—Dozens of teachers and TESOL students gathered for CATESOL Inland Empire’s Annual Holiday Potluck on Saturday, December 12, 2015. Attendees came appareled in “Elf”-themed clothing from the movie of that title, ready to meet other professionals and learn more about what the Inland Empire Chapter offers. The event began with an assortment of holiday activities such as making snowflakes and completing “Elf” movie trivia. At the midway point, Elf-like dishes* were served as guests indulged in further icebreakers.

The Inland Empire Chapter celebrated the holidays with an “Elf”-themed potluck.

The evening ended in communicative activities that expressed the goals and commitments of the Inland Empire Chapter, namely: offering affordable workshops on the latest strategies, professional-learning network opportunities, and professional development. The announcement of Inland Empire’s Spring Workshop for May 21 garnered attention from participants that led to some renewed and new memberships in anticipation of the future conference. Our chapter has had a strong start this year with a high level of interest and with most of its planning for the workshop finished.

The workshop will feature Brent Warner, award winning podcaster and ESL author,  from Edtech.TV. It will be an interactive and highly engaging workshop for strategies in incorporating student voices through audio. In this workshop, Brent will guide participants through a range of technology-enhanced strategies to help build listening and speaking skills in the ESL classroom and that will engage all students. Come join us for this opportunity and experience the practical application of audio in learning. Registration is now open at this link: Check out our website for more registration information and further updates for our annual CATESOL Inland Empire workshop at or contact us at

*The description “Elf-like dishes” refers to the movie itself. Within the movie, the character Buddy talks about the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup. The chapter served some snacks in keeping with those items, such as little cakes and chocolates.

Robert Orozco is the Inland Empire Chapter’s publicity co-coordinator.
