—As always, welcome to CATESOL! The Board of the largest organization in California and Nevada representing teachers of English language learners at all levels has been busy taking an in-depth look at our organization. Our theme for this year’s conference is “Embracing the Past—Planning the Future,” and we are taking that concept to heart. Inspired by our parent organization, TESOL, which is celebrating its 50th year at its convention in April (see TESOL President Andy Curtis’s message below), we are examining our structures, policies, and procedures to ensure that CATESOL remains a healthy, vital organization.

And speaking of TESOL’s 50th, I am very pleased to announce that one of our members, Judith O’Loughlin, has been recognized as one of TESOL’s 50 at 50! As the TESOL announcement ( reads:

“In keeping with the 50th Anniversary theme “Reflecting Forward,” TESOL has recognized two groups of professionals: 50 who have made significant contributions to the profession within the past 50 years (50 at 50), and 30 who are emerging as leaders in the profession (30 Up and Coming).”

It goes on to say that these 50 leaders “have made a significant contribution to the TESOL profession within the past 50 years. They were selected by the 50th Anniversary Advisory Team from more than 120 nominees.” And further, “TESOL International Association congratulates these outstanding TESOL professionals! Their leadership has helped build the association and develop English language teaching and learning into a profession that touches the lives of students and educators worldwide.”

What an honor for her—and for us!

Judy sets a fine example for all of us. CATESOL, as a volunteer organization, is member driven. Indeed, our members are our greatest asset! Without them, we have no organization. Thus, planning for the future is a call to action for you—the member. Whether you have just joined CATESOL or are a long-time member, your involvement is important. How do you engage? It’s easy! Join and participate in your level’s Google-group. Attend a chapter event or a regional conference. Share an idea in the CATESOL News. Give your time! Volunteer! No matter if the position is large or small, each is important to running the organization, presenting events, and producing quality materials. Not sure where to start? Contact us! We’d be happy to help you find a place that suits your talents and abilities.

Looking forward—

Sydney Rice
