—Seventeen members of CATESOL’s Inland Empire Chapter participated in a brief end-of-summer imaginary getaway to France by gathering for lunch on August 28 at Le Rendez-Vous Café in Colton. Members enjoyed French cuisine and competed for prizes based upon their knowledge of French culture. It was also a great opportunity to network with some recent TESOL graduates, who received advice from veteran TESOL members about possible job opportunities.

Iron Chef Meets ESL Lesson Design!

The Iron Educator is a lesson-design contest that brings together talented ESL teachers from within your community. It is a unique opportunity for people to push their skills and challenge their ways of teaching.

The goal is to come together and make a team lesson. Participants rapidly prototype lesson designs and inject new ideas to help grow the ESL teaching industry. We share a common theme (introduced on the day of the event) and constraints. We ask participants to create a team lesson from beginning to end in a prescribed time. The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking to result in short but innovative and experimental lessons. We encourage people to try out new ideas and push themselves.

Bring a laptop or tablet. We’ll provide you with other materials. The event, brought to you by CATESOL Inland Empire, will be held on October 8 at California Baptist University in Riverside.

To sign up and to find more information, go to: or to the IE CATESOL link on the CATESOL website.

Who will be crowned the first Iron Educator? We’ll see you there!

—Kaz Shida
