—The Steinbeck Chapter of CATESOL is energized after the 2017 Northern Regional Conference last spring in Pacific Grove, California. Kara Mac Donald continues in her excellent leadership as coordinator. We are organizing three exciting events for the 2017-2018 year.

Our very successful film nights, which have featured I Learn America (Fall 2015) and The Graduates/Los Graduados (Fall 2016), have brought together CATESOL and community members to watch and discuss informational films that address the issues our immigrant students face. Following on these inspiring events, we will have a night of “Panetta and Postcards” on November 9 at CSU, Monterey Bay. The Panetta Institute has been invited to discuss the Monterey County Reads Program and ways we can support literacy in our community.

Our Steinbeck Winter Conference Share will be held December 14 at Middlebury Institute of International Studies. These informal holiday gatherings not only allow our local talent to showcase a summary of talks they may have given at major conferences, but they are also able to share inspiring information gathered at major conferences such as the Annual CATESOL, TESOL, American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL), and Foreign Language Education Symposium (FLEDS).

On Saturday, April 14, we will hold our spring event, which will focus on advocacy issues for students in the current climate. Stay tuned for more information!

Finally, Steinbeck welcomes Kristen Arps, who has accepted the role of coordinator-elect for the Steinbeck Chapter!
